Brief Introduction

China Agricultural University (CAU) is one of the world’s best universities for agricultural sciences. The College of Humanities and Development studies at CAU is the institution that initiated development studies in China. The two-year master program in Rural Development and Management Studies will provide you with a rigorous and critical introduction to development. The course will introduce you to development studies as an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary subject. It covers the intellectual history of development, the paradigm shifts and internal conflicts within the discipline and the contemporary relevance of research to development policy and practice. Since 2008, the program has recruited 265 international students from 52 different countries. A total of 138 master students have graduated. Our students often choose careers in international organizations such as the United Nations, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), universities, and research centers.

Eligibility

Non-Chinese citizens who do not have Chinese nationality under the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China and hold a valid ordinary passport.

Degree: A strong academic record, and holding at least a Bachelor Degree obtained from an institution with well academic reputation. A first degree in social sciences or humanities or relevant working experiences in the field of development would be preferred.


Language: The program is in English and applicants should have an excellent English proficiency to be able to accomplish the study.

Application Documents


1. Two copies of Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of China Agricultural University (http://apply.cau.edu.cn), signed by the applicant.

2. The original or the notarized photocopies of degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution, and academic transcript (two copies); The certificate provided should be the original documents in Chinese or in English, otherwise notarized translations in Chinese or English are required.

3. Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professorship or higher.

4. Two copies of the page with personal information of the passport (ordinary passport).

5. Three copies of the applicant's recent photo (2 inches, without cap).

6. Non-refundable application fee of 400 rmb payable to China Agricultural University.

7. The Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (if any). Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS). Applicants should apply to China Scholarship Council (CSC) (Website: http://www.campuschina.org/content/details3_74776.html ) through the Chinese Embassies or Consulates, or relevant organizations in the home countries of the applicants between November and April (varied for different countries). Please find out the application deadline for your country in advance. The applicants may also apply for Chinese Government Scholarship with the recommendations from China Agricultural University. But the number of the recommended applicants is very limited and the deadline for CGS is end of February each year.

8. A letter from your current employer certifying your employment status, or a letter from your current university certifying when you are going to graduate.

9. One copy of physical examination results.

10. A study plan indicating the reasons you want to apply for our program, academic interests, and areas of potential study (at least 2 pages, double space, 12pt)
